The Dark Night of the Soul by Gerald G. May, M.D.

When we cannot chart our own course, we become vulnerable to God's protection, and the darkness becomes a guiding night, a night more kindly than the dawn, says distinguished psychiatrist Gerald May. A culmination of his life’s work, this profound book delves into the meaning and purpose of darkness. Some see these seasons as sinister or a less than normal experience for individuals and relationships. However, Mays sets our feet on solid ground by drawing upon the experiences of great Christian mystics, St. John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila, as well as scripture and his knowledge of the human heart. It is not necessarily a time of suffering or despair, but rather transformation found through abandoning oneself, losing oneself, and finding what is trustiest about our self and God. It is another way by which we learn what Paul wrote, My grace is sufficient; my power is made perfect in weakness. This is a book about hope.
